Montana
Prairies
On the shortgrass prairie of remote northeastern Montana, Smithsonian scientists are working with indigenous colleges in an effort to support the incredible biodiversity of the region.
In the summer of 2024, I had the unique opportunity to intern with the Smithsonian, spending the entire month of June shadowing scientists as they worked in the grasslands.
Considered one of the most in tact prairie ecosystems left in America, this corridor of the Northern Great Plains supports a wide array of insects, birds, and mammals.
With assistance from American Prairie, Smithsonian scientists have been working to reintroduce many extirpated species, including the American bison and the black footed ferret.
